Add watermark to your assets

A watermark is an image that is placed on an asset, so that the original file is not completely visible anymore. This is to protect copyrighted and unreleased assets from being downloaded freely. Downloads of watermarked assets have to be approved by admin users before light users can download those assets. In this way assets are downloaded in a controlled and safe way.

You can also decide on the exact date on which an asset should be watermarked.

Make sure you have this feature enabled for your account. Contact your Bynder Customer Success Manager for information and help with the setup.

Before you begin

  • To start using the Watermark feature, make sure you have sent us the file you want to use as the watermark. Make sure the file is a PNG, TIF or TIFF file with a transparent layer, so that the watermark can overlap the original asset without any background color.
  • If you want some users to be able to download watermarked assets without requesting the download, grant them the Download media with watermark right in Settings > Users & rights > Permission Management. Naturally, the downloaded watermarked asset does not display the watermark.
  • If you want other users to request the download of watermarked assets, grant the users who should approve those requests the Audit download requests right in Permission Management.

Now, the users who do not have the right to download watermarked assets will see the Available upon request button on the asset detail page. They need to click the button and provide the reason for requesting. The request is then displayed in the Notification center and in the Waiting Room of the approver.

Watermark audio, video, and document files

You can place a watermark on video and document files (not on audio files as those have no thumbnail). This places the watermark on the thumbnail and disables the preview for all users. Even the users with Download media with watermark permission cannot see the preview or play the audio or video files.

Use case

Watermark sensitive assets so that users who do not have the Download media with watermark permission have to request to download the assets. For example, all stock photos that are tagged as Licensed will display a watermark, and light users have to request access and provide a reason before downloading.
