You can download an asset with its original or updated metadata. Metadata is downloaded either as a CSV file or in XMP format.

Write metaproperties to namespace

You can export metaproperties and their values to specific XMP or IPTC/EXIF fields.

  1. Go to Settings > Taxonomy > Metaproperties management.

  2. Edit a selected metaproperty.

  3. Enter the metadata tag names in the Write metadata to namespace field in the following format:

     XMP: Description, XMP Creator

If a file has been tagged with this metaproperty, and you download this file with XMP metadata, the metaproperty values should be exported to the tags provided in this field. We support export to XMP and IPTC/EXIF.

Several metaproperties can be written in the same namespace.

Download options

CSV collects the metadata as of the download date. So if, for example, a description was updated for an asset, the updated description will be included.

XMP can either present the original metadata (as of the upload date) or the updated one (as of download date). The XMP data is embedded in the downloaded asset.

To download an asset with metadata, select an asset in the asset overview, click the download icon and select the asset select the format of the metadata file. Alternatively, on the Asset detail page, select the metadata format and click on the asset type to download.

If you want to also download metaproperties whose data is extracted from the embedded metadata, make sure the metaproperty has the Export field selected and that these are Text metaproperties. See Manage metaproperties.

You can also opt for a setting in which all the users who have the Export metadata csv file on download permission have to download either the XMP or CSV (or both) metadata. With this setting on, the Include CSV metadata and/or the Include XMP metadata checkbox on the Asset detail page and in the download pre-selection is selected by default and the user cannot clear it.

  • When you download assets or a collection with the option Include XMP metadata selected make sure the description field of your assets does not contain line breaks. Otherwise, the download may not start.

  • XMP metadata embedded in PNGs might not display properly on Windows.

Metadata extracted by default

The following table describes which metadata-fields get retrieved and parsed to which Bynder fields. Metadata fields do not have a pre-defined order. The default extraction takes places regardless of settings.

Custom metadata tags

Customers can fill their metaproperties by adding the Metadata-field to a metaproperty ( See the section below). Any EXIF, XMP or IPTC tag can be entered for ingestion, however the only fully custom metadata tags that we support are those based on the XMP-metadata standard.

Display XMP information on the Asset detail page

There might be embedded metadata that does not automatically display on the Asset detail page and required mapping onto metaproperties in Bynder.

  1. Open the EXIF view of the file. On Mac, you can use the Terminal.

  2. Copy the tag name. For example:

  3. Create a new metaproperty of the Text type that is searchable and editable. Select also Display field and Main Filter.

  4. Enter the tag name in the Metadata tag field. Make sure you do not use spaces. For example:

  5. Import the asset. The metaproperty will automatically be populated with EXIF data and displayed on the Asset detail page.
